Three separate recent incidents of air rage could be indicative of rising levels of frustration among airline passengers.

In one incident, a man was arrested yesterday morning "on charges of slapping a flight attendant on a JetBlue plane bound from Florida to Boston's Logan International Airport," according to the Boston Globe.

According to the Globe article, a flight attendant ordered the passenger to move his bag beneath his seat before the plane took off. A Globe reporter, who on the airplane, said it appeared the passenger attempted to comply, but the flight attendant wasn't satisfied.

"There was no apparent commotion during the three-hour flight," according to the Globe account, but the flight crew had the passenger escorted off the plane when they arrived three hours later in Boston.

In a separate incident yesterday, Delta Airlines called state police to remove another unruly passenger, reports the Globe.

Perhaps the most dramatic story of air rage occurred on Sunday on a United Airlines flight from Washington, D.C., to Ghana, where a fist fight broke out between passengers over the seat of one passenger reclining into the "personal space" of another passenger, according to the Washington Post and several other accounts.

According to the Post story, "the fight started with a slap to the head" by one passenger. While "peacemakers" tried to intervene, the pilot decided to turn back to Washington Dulles Airport, dumping most of the airplane's 16,700 gallons of fuel in the Atlantic Ocean so the airplane could turn around and land safely again.

Because this turn-around occurred over Washington, D.C., airspace, a pair of U.S. Air Force F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to escort the airplane back to the airport, as they are supposed to do, since 9/11, whenever an irregularity occurs in Washington, D.C., airspace.

According to an AOL account of the incident, "this isn't the first time a reclined seat has caused in-flight fisticuffs. In November 2010, a man on an American Airlines flight got so upset about a reclined seat that he pulled another man's ear so strongly that his glasses came off."

The assailant in that incident was charged with "one count of assault by striking, beating, or wounding on an aircraft, and faced up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine," according to the AOL story.

Curiously enough, no arrests were made nor charges filed against the unruly passengers involved in the United Airlines incident, even though the pilot was forced to dump nearly $50,000 worth of airplane fuel and caused the military fighter jets to scramble as well. In addition to the fuel cost, the Ghana flight was delayed until Monday.
