Burnaby parks staff are set to paint over racist graffiti found in a washroom at Central Park earlier this week.

On Wednesday, Burnaby RCMP Corp. Dave Reid said the graffiti, found in the men's facilities, had been there a week and possibly longer before it was reported to police by a local radio reporter.

"It's just basically hate messages, it's racist slurs and white-power-type things you'd expect to see, swastikas and stuff," Reid said. "Something you'd expect to see from somebody with low self-esteem, coupled with low intellect and a magic marker."

It refers to blacks, Chinese and Russians "but none of it makes sense."

The main concern is having children exposed to it who might then view such messages as acceptable but most adults would likely just shrug it off as "garbage," he said.

Reid said he was torn between raising awareness of it to the public and giving it too much attention and "giving this idiot what he wants."

He didn't hide his disdain for the culprit.

"These mouth-breathers that are out there, there's always some idiot who's going to find a marker and figure out that the dark end makes marks."

Similarly, Burnaby parks and recreation director Dave Ellenwood said Wednesday he was "disgusted that I have to spend energy on this. It is morally corrupt, it's disrespectful, it's hurtful."

Ellenwood said parks staff "try to keep on top of it but it's unfortunately, a common occurrence that you know, we battle every day."

The report of the racist graffiti came in a few days ago. Janitorial staff are at the washrooms daily and in this case, the markings have been difficult to clean off, Ellenwood said.

A crew was scheduled to paint over it in the next couple days.

"We've had a rash of this. And it is cyclical. They'll hit a place for a few days straight and we'll go every day and we'll clean it off and they'll go back and do it again."

He said the parks department takes such incidents seriously but why someone would do such a thing, "I just can't understand it."

Anyone who sees graffiti in the city is asked to report it to Burnaby's graffiti hotline, 604-298-TAGS (8247), online at http://bit.ly/13lXDsP or to Burnaby's parks patrol, 604-294-7227. If anyone witnesses someone producing graffiti they should call 911.

Burnaby Parks Board concerned about racist graffiti
Staff are trying to stay on top of the issue

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – The Burnaby Parks Board admits it has trouble keeping up with graffiti sprayed in its facilities, but says the racist rant scrawled in a bathroom stall is still very concerning.

Staff actually look for vandalism on a regular basis.

“So we’re pretty vigilant about removing it when it happens,” says Dave Ellenwood, the Director of Parks and Recreation.

“We find that if we keep removing it, they eventually go away. It is kind of cyclical. They move to another location if we keep on top of it. If we are lucky enough to have patrols to patrol people, that’s what we will do,” he explains.

This particular incident included swastikas, racial slurs and other messages of hate at Central Park.
