HOUSTON—A University of Houston Clear Lake professor was arrested and charged with making a terroristic threat.

Lei Wu, 40, is accused of making the threat to a faculty member on April 8. Wu allegedly made the statement after requesting to speak with the woman about a work-related matter. The faculty member told investigators that she recorded the conversation because she had issues with Wu in the past.

Wu told the faculty member he wanted tenure and said “both would be blood,” according to his arrest warrant. When she asked him to elaborate, because she took it as a threat to herself and the board members, Wu allegedly said “it will be bad for either” and “both will be blood.”

Wu was released from jail after posting $500 bond. 500美元保释了,

围观:

①The guy is stupid when quarreling with his colleague. He doesn’t know how to fight intelligently by proper wording.

⑤Conversation recorded without counterpart’s consent can’t be used in the court as an evident. The recording is consider as illegal source in the court. Police arrest is based on wrongful evident. If this situation is happened vice versa, I can bet the police will still arrest the Chinese, yet let go the White!!!!!!!!!!

⑥要动脑子和采取行动,不要逞口舌之快。

法律规定,录音前要通知对方。未经同意录音是非法的,录下来的音不能算证据,不能提交陪审团。

⑦和老美斗要留下证据。俺是这样做的:

departmental secretary to me:

There was a piece of equipment that you had in the office and Dr. XXX took it to use. She currently has it in her lab and if you need it, please see her.

my reply: Thanks a lot. but...

It is funny. The stereotaxic device and microinjector were almost trashed. There were left in the corner with full of dust. I cleaned them carefully, and have them sterilized....and suddenly it becomes useful!!!

Dr.XXX:

Thanks. I have a funded expt that requires them and was looking for them, so greatly appreciate your effort; now I don’t need to clean the dust off!

In the future please inform Dr. MMM or myself if you are taking equipment from the Core facilities.

Have a good weekend!

My follow-up reply: I did not and will never take anything from the core facility. As I said the microinjector was improperly handled by someone, it could have been damaged. (As a trained researcher at Hopkins, this is not acceptable to NIH standard; in our last grant sent to NIH, the reviewer label us bad research environment). I expect to use it soon and cleaned it and calibrated it. This is mandatory maintenance for electronic device.

I hope you enjoy using this and would like to help if you like.

Dr. XXX:

I appreciate your dedication to the Core equipment.’ I have decades of experience in stereotaxy so do not foresee requiring assistance.

In the future, please inform Dr. MMM or me if you are taking any equipment out of the Core facilitites; I have been looking for it for several days. Of course, it is also available to you and any other Core researhers.

I felt sick at this moment and was hesitating to reply, but departmental chair surfaced:

Dr. XXX, please come and see me at your earliest convenience.

Retain an attorney asap. recording could be illegal and get thrown out of the court.

Good luck and grow mature.

I work at Fluor, Fluor does not tolerate any employee retaliation. That is company policy.

The woman asked Wu to explain what he meant because she interpreted his comment as a threat to her and the board members.

Wu replied, "It will be bad for either" and repeated, "Both will be blood."

The woman believed Wu was going to physically assault her or staff members, the affidavit stated.

Wu is scheduled to appear April 16 in Harris County Court at Law No. 4.

A terroristic threat is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail or a $4,000 fine, or both.

Wu, who has a doctorate in computer science from the University of Montreal, holds the rank of assistant professor in software engineering, according to the University of Houston Clear Lake website.

Texas’s wiretapping law is a "one-party consent" law. Texas makes it a crime to intercept or record any "wire, oral, or electronic communication" unless one party to the conversation consents. Texas Penal Code § 16.02

⑩The faculty member told investigators that she recorded the conversation because she had issues with Wu in the past.

Nearly every one of us needs to learn something from this incident: Workplace aggression stirs anguishing consequences – this might be explained why violence occurring more frequently in workplaces nowadays.

Bullying is everywhere, and your workplace is no exception. However, you should consistently encourage yourselves to focus your efforts on an analytical, collaborative manner for creative solutions, rather than wasting your time, energy and emotions on getting in a pointlessly verbal tit-for-tat with your bullies. Handling a conflict, dispute or even an aggression wisely in workplace, requires intellect and experience, a doctorate ain’t gonna put you there voluntarily.

Especially for our fellow countrymen -- don’t be an easy target -- is the number one priority in nipping bullying in the bud. If someone is trying to target on you, please don’t shrink away and allow the bullying to continue without any consequence. Whereas you would always remain professional -- by looking your bully in the eye, stay calm, but be strong; in other words, you should respond swiftly without getting emotional: "I don’t think your tone is appropriate." On the other hand, exchanging harsh wordings or verbal threads can only make situation irremediable.

Sometimes, learning how to take a step back and look at the situation objectively is critical. In many cases, your guts might tell you that you’re being singled out, but in reality, it isn’t the case. Therefore, evaluating the situation and analyzing the consequence do allow you jump out of the box and to get a big picture -- is that colleague nasty to everyone in the office, or is it just you? Is there any chance you’re being overly sensitive, taking that colleague’s words or actions to heart when they should be simply ignored? Or maybe that colleague just has a bad attitude and it has nothing to do with you. However, if you are being singled out and that person is being more than just annoying or rude; moreover, that person is also intentionally trying to harm you and your ability to do your work, meaning, your situation does indeed rise to the level of bullying. In such circumstances, you must deal with it seriously, with a professional manner.

There are many tried-and-true recommendations, and having your situation documented is one of them. Get in the habit of noting what happens with that bully and when. Professional neutrals and counsel suggest: Keep a detailed log in reference to your interactions -- what that bully says and does, as well as what you say and do. Documentation will be your biggest ally should things take a turn for the worse in the future. And, remember to always act in a way that you can be proud of. Don’t let the bully push your buttons and bait you into an emotional reaction.

My advice to the wise would be: Our fellow countrymen should really apply ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do’. -- don’t try to solve bullying situation alone, take the issue to your HR department for help! Describe what is happening in every detail; explain how the situation is impacting your ability to do your day-to-day work. Most importantly, you should stress to HR personnel that you want to find a productive way of addressing such circumstances. Please take my word for that, in the States, HR personnel have more experience in resolving this kind of workplace issue, as they understand the potential legal ramification if the situation escalates.

Experience and simple common sense all suggest that the process proposed above seems likely to significantly increase the probability to the successful management of verbal aggression in workplace.

Last but not least, my fellow countrymen: There is always a place to shine for someone who works hard and has skills. In case, you’ve done your best and tried every channel which is available, but no improvements have occurred, it’s time to consider taking your skills elsewhere and moving on.
