The GroupM Knowledge-Hurun Wealth Report 2012 was released July 31, listing China's millionaires and their distribution across the country, as well as their investment habits, consumption trends, charitable donations, social responsibility and media use, reports the Nanjing-based Yangtse Evening Post.

As of the end of 2011, the number of individuals in China whose assets exceed 10 million yuan (US$1.57 million) reached 1 million for the first time. There are 60,000 more 10-millionaires than last year, according to the report. Also, 63,500 individuals are members of the 100-million-yuan (US$15.7 million) club, 3,500 more than last year.

Beijing has the most wealthy individuals, followed by Guangdong and Shanghai. Only 16% of China's wealthy are to be found in the country's northeastern, southwestern, central and northwestern areas.

Twenty-eight percent of the people on the list say they have confidence in China's economy for the next two years — half of last year's figure. Real estate is still the first choice for individual investment, followed by stocks. Twenty-six percent have an interest in gold investments.

One-third of the individuals consider paying taxes to be the best embodiment of their social responsibility. A little under a quarter of them make donations to charity.

Half of the 10-millionaires are entrepreneurs, 20% are stock investors, 15% are real estate speculators and 15% are executives. Their average age is 39 and the sex ratio is 6:4 by male to female. They have 20 annual leave days on average and go abroad three times a year.

Five hundred and three individuals whose assets exceed 63 million yuan (US$9.8 million) said their average annual spending is around 1.76 million yuan (US$280,000), 9% less than last year. Tourism accounts for the main part of their spending.

They also spend big on their children's education. Around 85% of those with assets exceeding 10 million yuan and 90% of those with assets that exceeding 100 million yuan consider sending their children abroad to be educated. The United States is seen as the best choice, followed by Britain and Canada.

The report indicates that 16% of the individuals on the list have applied to become citizens of other countries and another 44% are considering doing so. Canada and the US are the top destinations. One-third already have assets abroad. Their overseas assets account for 19% of their total assets. Among those who do not have assets abroad, 30% plan to invest abroad in the next three years.

Forty percent of the individuals have an account on Sina Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter, where each has an average of 50,000 followers.
