《The New York Times 纽约时报》7日报道，卡尔文‧特里林(Calvin Trillin)4日在《The New Yorker 纽约客》杂志上发表了一首打油诗，以一个恼怒的美国“吃货”的口吻，描述了如今中餐在美国是怎样的种类繁多。不过，一些读者认为这难以接受。
　　批评者们认为，这首名为「这么多省份有完没完?」(Have They Run Out of Provinces Yet?)的打油诗是对中国文化的蔑视。
　　特里林一直以来就是个美食评论家，也经常写关于中餐的故事。此外，写滑稽打油诗是他的副业，他写的一本书就叫做《我作为打油诗人的一生》(Deadline Poet: My Life as a Doggerelist)。
　　不过，网络上的批评者们认为，这篇出现在《纽约客》食物与旅行栏目中的打油诗，将中国描绘成了一个拥有一窝蜂人口和地名的地方，这反射出了对中国的无知和恐惧。

　　很久以前，这里只有广东菜，　　　　　　　Long ago, there was just Cantonese. (Long ago, we were easy to please.)
　　但后来有了四川，　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　But then food from Szechuan came our way,
　　让广东菜成了过眼云烟。　　　　　　　　　　Making Cantonese strictly passé.
　　我们歌唱四川菜，　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　Szechuanese was the song that we sung,
　　虽然麻婆豆腐能把舌头烧穿。　　　　　　　Though the ma po could burn through your tongue.
　　上海菜也来追随，　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　Then when Shanghainese got in the loop,
　　我们吃着带汤的饺子吧唧嘴。　　　　　　　We slurped dumplings whose insides were soup.
　　毛泽东的出生地湖南，　　　　　　　　　　　　Then Hunan, the birth province of Mao,

　　它是否躲在西藏的旁边。　　　　　　　　　　Is there one tucked away near Tibet?
　　到底还有完没完?　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　Have they run out of provinces yet?

　　Jezebel网站打趣特里林和他的诗，仿照6年级学生写读后感的语气写道：“这首诗的主人公是一个十分热爱中国民众的人，但他只是觉得中国人太多了。他真的很喜爱中国美食，但被这些繁多的种类吓到了。”
　　西雅图《陌生人》周刊(The Stranger)认为，特里林的诗中称中国的省份层出不穷，是利用了中国人大批涌入的刻板印象，反映了一种对外国人的恐惧心理。
　　特里林通过邮件向英国《卫报》表示，他的这首诗“这是在调侃对食物痴迷的中产阶级”。他还提到，他在2003年写的一首名为《布里奶酪和夏布利酒怎么了?》(“What Happened to Brie and Chablis?”)也是取笑西方餐饮界当时的流行趋势，但并非是针对法国的侮辱。
　　但这种解释没有平息网络上对他的批评。“所谓‘讽刺文学’的说法不能成为这些粗制滥造、不明所以就发表的作品的挡箭牌，”小说家伍绮诗(Celeste Ng)说。
　　但也有人认为这种谴责有些牵强，目前居住北京的华裔作家郭怡广(Kaiser Kuo)表示，他不明白为什么有一些华裔因特里林的中餐打油诗感到冒犯。
　　《陌生人》周刊的另一篇文章认为确实存在特里林是反讽的可能。作者引用一位英语教授的话说，“他(特里林)成为美食撰稿人和打油诗人已经一百万年了。我经常看到他骑着自行车在华埠转来转去，他喜欢在那里吃东西。”
