叶卡捷琳娜原名叫索菲亚，是一位德国小公国公主，14岁嫁给了彼得大帝的孙子沙皇彼得三世，改名叶卡捷琳娜，这个婚姻使得她最终有机会伙同她的情夫和女友，推翻了彼得三世而自立为君主，把自已从失宠的皇后变成了女皇，以异族的身份统治俄罗斯帝国。她不仅是位女沙皇，还是俄罗斯有史以来四位女沙皇中，唯一与彼得一世共享“大帝”称号的君王。

Catherine’s rule re-vitalized Russia, which grew stronger than ever and became recognized as one of the great powers of Europe.
