Speeding Lamborghini wipes out in Surrey after dangerous maneuver

SOUTH SURREY — A dangerous attempt by the driver of a Lamborghini to pass a slow-moving car on Highway 99 resulted in a feiry crash when the car lost control and crashed into a ditch Sunday morning.

A dashboard mounted cam video posted on YouTube shows the Lamborghini Murcielago with Alberta license plates was travelling northbound near the 32nd Avenue exit when it tried to overtake a slower car in the left lane. After appearing to succeed in making the tight squeeze it spins out of control and crashes.

The occupants escaped without injury but the expensive sports car burst into flames, causing extensive and likely irreparable damage.

Road conditions were dry at the time. A black Dodge Viper, also seen in the video with Alberta license plates, stopped after the accident and is believed to have been travelling with the other vehicle. CTV reported that the driver was a 26-year-old male.

It is not yet confirmed if RCMP are investigating street racing charges. In addition to penalties and fines from associated charges, vehicles used in a street race can be immediately impounded for seven days at the owner’s expense (or up to 60 days) and the driver prohibited from driving for a minimum of 15 days.

Depending on the severity of the street racing incident and the driver’s record, their licence could be suspended for up to 24 additional months. The vehicle used in the race may also be seized for forfeiture under the Civil Forfeiture Act. A Lamborghini was famously seized and sold in 2012 by the provincial government after being caught in illegal street racing on Highway 99.

Lamborghini only produced 4,099 Murcielagos between 2001 and 2010, with the average cost as much as a house, listing for between $354,000 and $450,000 on auto trader websites.
